Top MBA Colleges Admission by CAT Exam
CAT is considered one of the most challenging and prestigious management entrance exams in the country. Here are some key points about the CAT exam:
- Conducting Body: CAT is conducted annually by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) on a rotational basis. Apart from the IIMs, many other top management institutes in India also accept CAT scores for their MBA and PGDM programs.
- Exam Pattern: The CAT exam is a computer-based test (CBT) that typically takes place in November or December each year. It consists of three sections:
- Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC)
- Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR)
- Quantitative Ability (QA)
- Duration: The duration of the CAT exam is 2 hours. Each section is allotted 40 minutes, and candidates are not allowed to switch between sections during the test.
- Question Types: CAT questions may vary from multiple-choice questions (MCQs) to non-MCQs, where candidates have to type the answer directly into the computer.
- Scoring and Marking: CAT follows a scoring pattern where each correct answer carries a specified number of marks (usually +3), and for each incorrect answer, there is negative marking (usually -1). However, negative marking is not applicable for non-MCQs
- Eligibility Criteria: To be eligible for the CAT exam, a candidate must hold a bachelor’s degree with a minimum percentage (usually 50% or equivalent CGPA). Final-year students can also apply.
- Application Process: The application process for CAT usually begins in August or September. Candidates need to register online, fill in their personal and academic details, upload necessary documents, and pay the application fee.
- Admission Process: After the CAT results are declared, candidates who meet the cutoff criteria set by various participating institutes are shortlisted for the next stage, which typically involves Written Ability Test (WAT), Group Discussion (GD), and Personal Interview (PI).
- Preparation: CAT is known for its high level of difficulty and competitiveness. Candidates need to prepare thoroughly, practice previous years’ question papers, and take mock tests to improve their time management and problem-solving skills.
- Acceptance by Other Institutes: In addition to the IIMs, many other prestigious B-Schools and management institutes in India consider CAT scores for admission. However, some institutes also accept scores from other management entrance exams like XAT, SNAP, GMAT, etc.
The official notification for CAT 2023 has been released on 30th July 2023, bringing excitement and anticipation to thousands of eager test-takers. Like previous years, the exam will be conducted in three sessions, allowing the students to showcase their abilities and pursue their dream careers.
It is worth noting that the responsibility of administering CAT 2023 lies in the hands of one of the old Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs). This year, this responsibility has been taken by IIM Lucknow. This ensures the same level of excellence, reliability, and fairness that has come to be associated with this esteemed examination.
The registrations for CAT 2023 begins from 2nd August and close by 13th September, 2023. CAT is a two-hour test, composed of MCQs and Non-MCQs. Its total number of questions is expected to be 66, as per the latest pattern. In the last few years, there have been frequent changes in the CAT exam pattern but, it will most probably be the same this time.
With more than 2 lakh aspirants appearing for the CAT exam annually, the competition is fierce, as only a select few thousand are able to secure their coveted spots in top B-schools. While the IIMs remain the epitome of excellence, other renowned B-schools such as MDI (Gurgaon), IITs, SP Jain (Mumbai), IMT (Ghaziabad), FMS (Delhi), KJ Somaiya Institute of Management Studies (Mumbai), Great Lakes Institute of Management (Chennai), Xavier Institute of Management (Bhubaneswar), and many more prestigious institutions also accept CAT scores, further expanding the opportunities for aspiring management professionals.
